John F. Kennedy went to a funeral today, and so did I. It was the funeral of Paul Muhly, a friend of mine I met in the 1970s and who died a few years ago. He was one of the first to become involved with Boystown.

I came in contact with him in the early ‘70s, when I was a young activist. I wasn’t involved with the local organizations in the 1970s, but I was part of a group of Chicago activists who were trying to bring attention to issues that were of concern to us: South Side housing, street gangs, poverty, police shootings. From there, we started doing community organizing in various neighborhoods and started a hunger council, which later became the Coalition Against Hunger. It was a group made up of about fifteen or twenty activists.

We had some pretty ambitious goals. For example, we wanted to reach out to the groups of people who were excluded from the Movement, the political movement that was developing at the time. We wanted to speak for those communities, and we wanted to bring those issues into the Movement. So we did a lot of things, like pushing for the passage of neighborhood redevelopment plans to stop the destruction of Black communities.

We started doing food demonstrations, like one day we marched down Devon
