I’ve only just recently started to get into Buddy Holly, and of all the guys I’ve tried, his sound is by far the most familiar (and maybe closest to what I want my own style to sound like). But I’m not loving it. Too poppy, too much falsettos. But y’all, why are you rocking out so much? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I love the early Elvis and Buddy Holly. It’s odd to hear both songs on my iPod, but I think Holly’s a bit more interesting because I haven’t heard so many people with his sound, which is something I’ve always liked.
Bryan: Thanks for the compliment! How would you describe your own style? Maybe something in your own “sound”?
Holly’s a bit of a challenge, as I’m sure you know. You pretty much have to embrace every single part of the Buddy Holly sound, and he only had around 800 songs total, and I’m pretty sure several of them are already available in re-recorded versions.
When I think of my own sound, I tend to think of vintage surf music, like The Ventures and The Ventures – Volume 2. To me, it has a certain je-ne-sais-quoi that I think both Holly and The Beatles have.
That said, I don’t want to be a “Sixties Retrogarten” musician who copies some things from the Beatles/Holly/etc, because I think that would go against the very essence of that style. I like the idea of moving forward, not wanting to copy the past. But at the same time, if it’s gonna be a tribute, then I’d like to do something REALLY cool and unique.
I’m not really in a place right now to draw a reference from, because I’ve been doing this for only a couple of months. I’m making my own songs now, and if I’m going to draw anything from my
