The year is 2129. Humanity has destroyed the Earth in self-defense. The humans have now been living in self-sustaining cities on the Moon. The purpose of this text is to provide a meaningful record of the pure
Dox “lanD operating system as it was in the year of its last
reincarnation.

Introduction
I started this project a couple of years ago. It was originally named
doX, a deliberately cryptic moniker that refers to Dox, the kernel
written by Andy Tanenbaum for MVS/370. In this case, D stands for
“domain”, which refers to what I assume would be a set of physical
devices (/dev/sda, /dev/st0,…).
It occurred to me that I was possibly overthinking this project a
little bit. I’d spent days–even weeks–thinking about it before
really getting anything done. I was looking to reinvent the wheel
but quite honestly I didn’t want to do it. But, I couldn’t shake a
feeling that if I did reinvent the wheel, I’d have to come up with
some new metaphors. So, I narrowed my studies to the dilemma, “What
is the nature of information?” It turns out that the answer is
mathematics. I started a journey of reading books on mathematics.
I found the field of function theory fascinating. I found it
similar to what I was trying to create:
information. If information was a black box (the null
machine), then function theory would be the physical
representation of binary information. You have bits, then you can
perform binary operations on them. You have NAND gates, so now you can
perform binary addition operations. You have Boolean algebra,
mechanical processes, and relationship matrices. You can write
programs in all of these formalisms. All these formalisms only
describe the behavior of the black box. They don’t take into account
the intelligence of the machine that performs the behavior. They also
have a political import: if you program in one of these
formalisms, you are not left alone to understand

For almost two decades I have dreamed of creating an alternate history of the European continent during the Renaissance. In 2004 I finally decided to make that dream a reality and began creating a history that was different in almost every detail. One major exception was the inclusion of Venice. The Italian city state developed into one of the world’s greatest commercial powers, rivaling that of China and the Spanish empire. In the process Venice also became the most powerful naval power in the world. All of this was accomplished by my player character, Giordano Bruno.
With four other writers I have collaborated on a short story collection based on my Europa Universalis IV game world. Through the first four chapters Giordano Bruno’s story has taken him from the 1440s to 1461, from the year of the Turks’ first seizure of Constantinople to the rise of the Tuscan city state of Florence.
